Effects of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy on Neuromuscular Control of the Head-Neck

Who can participate?

  • Nearly anyone! We are currently enrolling those with and without neck pain

  • All participants must be between the ages of 21 and 65

  • No history of spinal surgery, spinal fracture or cancer

    • Go through a brief evaluation process to see if you meet additional specific criteria to participate

What’s involved with participating?

  • Those without pain who fit the specific criteria & choose to proceed will:

    • Perform 2 testing sessions

Each testing session includes measurement of movement control tasks using a robotic platform and will take approximately 2 hours.

    • Complete questionnaires
    • Receive $40 in compensation

  • Those with neck pain who fit the specific criteria & choose to proceed will:

    • Receive 4 Manual Medicine Treatments

A board-certified osteopathic physician will apply hands-on techniques to the body which may include spinal manipulation, gentle pressure, stretching and resistance. The goal of the treatment is to relieve pain and improve physical function.

    • Perform 4 testing sessions over an 8 week period

Each testing session includes measurement of movement control tasks using a robotic platform and will take approximately 2 hours.

    • Complete questionnaires
    • Receive $100 in compensation

Researchers from MSUCOR are conducting these studies at the McLaren Orthopedic Hospital in Lansing, MI. These research studies are funded by the Nation Institutes of Health (NIH). Co-Investigators are Jongeun Choi, PhD, Lisa DeStefano, DO, Jacek Cholewicki, PhD.
